\u201eEs gibt eine Menge an reiner Mathematik, die beim Untersuchen der empirischen Welt nicht genutzt wird und daher nur um ihrer Sch\u00f6nheit willen betrachtet wird\u201c, so Serge Lange (1927-2005) \u2013 in: Faszination Mathematik. Leipzig 1989, S. 13. \u201eHowever incorrect a mathematical theorem may appear to be, you ought never to be satisfied there is something imperfect about it till it gives you the impression of being also beautiful\u201c, so George Boole (1815-1864) \u2013 zitiert nach William Kneale, Boole and the Revival of Logic. In: Mind 47 (1948), S. 149-175, hier S. 151. Die mathematische Erkenntnis ist in ihrem \u201esystematischen Auf- und Ausbau die vollendetste und reinste Form logischer Geistest\u00e4tigkeit, die Verk\u00f6rperung h\u00f6chster Verstandes-\u00c4sthetik\u201c, so Alfred Pringsheim (1850-1941) \u2013 in: \u00dcber Wert und Unwert der Mathematik.<\/p>\n

In: Jahresbericht der deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung 13 (1904), S. 357-392, hier S. 381. \u201eThe mathematician\u2019s patterns, like the painter\u2019s or the poet\u2019s must bei beautiful. [\u2026] Beauty is the first test: there is no permanent place in the world for ugly mathematics (Godfrey Hardy, A Mathematician\u2019s Apology [1940]. Cambridge 1967, S. 85). Solche Zuschreibungen lassen sich nicht nur f\u00fcr die Mathematik nahezu beliebig vermehren, sondern sie finden sich ebenso oft im Blick auf die Naturwissenschaften: \u201eBeauty is our guide in theoretical physics, but it\u2019s not the beauty of the equations printed on a piece of paper that we\u2019re searching for\u2026\u201c \u2013 gerichtet gegen Paul Diracs (1902-1984) oft zitierten Worte: \u201eIt is more important to have beauty in one\u2019s equations than to have them fit experiment\u201c \u2013 \u201e\u2026it is the beauty of the principles, how they hang together\u201c, so Steven Weinberg \u2013 in: Towards the Final Laws of Physics. In: Richard P. Feynman und S. Weinberg, Elementary Particles and the Laws of Physics: The 1986 Dirac Memorial Lectures. Cambridge 1987, S. 107. 1965 hei\u00dft es allerdings, auch wenn es sich nicht widersprechen muss, in Richard Feynman, The Character of Physical Law (S. 156; unsere Hervorhebung): \u201eIn general we look for a new law by the following process. Frist we guess it. Then we compute the consequences of the guess to see what would implied if this law that we guessed is right. Then we compare the result of the computation with nature, with experiment or experience, compare it directly with observation, to see if it works. If it disagrees with experiment it is wrong.\u00a0In that simple statement is the key to science. It does not make any difference how beautiful your guess is<\/em>. It does not make any difference how smart you are, who made the guess, or what his name is \u2013 if it disagrees with experiment it is wrong. That is all there is to it.\u201c<\/p>\n
